Tech Ed 2008

By:   |   Read Comments (3)   |   Related Tips: More > Professional Development Conferences

Problem
Tech-Ed 2008 is fast approaching.  So what does one need to do to prepare for Tech-Ed in Orlando, FL?  We look into everything from registration to the options for filling that brain of yours and mixing it up at the end of the day.  Many of us go to professional conferences, but Tech-Ed is unlike any you've attended.  Think Venti, not Grande, Folks!

Solution
Following is a list of items to think about prior to the conference.  Although it may not be an all inclusive list it does give you an idea of things to think about.

Registration The first step for attending Tech-Ed is registering.  Visit http://www.microsoft.com/events/teched2008/default.mspx and make the most important decision about attending: which week?  Microsoft is splitting the 2008 Tech-Ed into a Developer's Week June 3-6 and an IT-Pro Week June 10-13.  Once you determine which week fits your position and skill set proceed with the registration process.  The important things to keep in mind pertaining to registration:
  • You are able to register for pre-conference sessions, hands-on labs, or trade show floor access without being a conference attendee.
  • You can register for both weeks at a discounted price.
  • Pre-conference sessions this year offer the ability to take a deep dive into SQL 2008 and BI.  Two SQL-centric pre-cons are offered each week of Tech-Ed.
  • Though early registration has passed as of May 3, 2008, you can still receive a free t-shirt for registrations made through May 23, 2008.  Who out of you wouldn't trade your family pet for a free t-shirt.
Hotel Arrangements Hotel arrangements can be made directly with the hotel of choice or via the Tech-Ed registration website through May 7, 2008.  A listing of all hotels offering Tech-Ed discounts is available on the registration website.
Car Rental
  • A big topic of discussion is "Should I rent a car?"  It really depends upon what you plan to do at night once sessions wind down for the evening.  Each of the "Conference Hotels" are a designated stop for the shuttle buses running to and from the Convention Center.  Even if you do not end up staying at a conference hotel, odds are you'll be within walking distance to one.  It's common practice to simply hop the shuttle bus at the nearest conference hotel.  These buses typically run into the early evening.
  • Parking is not cheap in Orlando.  Take your company's reimbursement policies into consideration when deciding to rent a car.  The average cab fare from the airport is around $25.00 and cab fare to various sites around the Convention Center is not too expensive.  Restaurants abound around the hotels and with the various vendors hosting parties odds are you'll not need to go far from your hotel in the evenings looking for something to do.
Tech-Ed Connect Tech-Ed Connect is a networking portal for attendees.  It allows you to meet up with other attendees with similar interests and backgrounds before you get to Orlando. You can join existing groups created for PASS members, Extracurricular Activities, User Group Leaders, Musicians, Canadians, you name it.  You can search for individuals or groups that fit your interests.  Use Tech-Ed Connect to:
  • Make plans for sharing cab or shuttle rides from the airport.
  • Plan evening recreational activities.
  • Get recommendations for classes or speakers.
  • Get the details on vendor-sponsored parties and meetings.
Session Types Tech-Ed affords you the ability to tailor your education through class sessions that fit your learning style:
  • Pre-Conference Seminars - These sessions give you a full day of learning on a single topic.  They are a great way to take a deep dive into a topic that interests you.  You can not get this level of education and detail in a regular 75 minute classroom session.  The pre-conferences are not included in the full conference price however, and they are filling up.
  • Microsoft Resources Zone - Microsoft brings their MSDN, TechNet, and Microsoft Learning staff to Orlando along with their virtual labs.
  • Technical Tracks - there are 19 different technical tracks for this year's event.  SQL Server is just one of those tracks and within the Database Platform track there are over 70 sessions!
  • Technical Learning Center - The TLC is comprised of Microsoft product demo stations, Interactive Theaters, Hands-On Labs, Instructor-Led Labs, and Community Lounges.  These are the more-interactive sessions that Tech-Ed has to offer where you can work through new technologies or current, unresolved issues with Microsoft professionals on the computer or whiteboard.  You also have the ability to demo the latest software (Katmai anyone?) with Microsoft representatives standing by to answer all your questions.
Build Your Schedule The Tech Ed site allows you to build out your schedule ahead of time so you're not scrambling to do so once you receive your media packet at the on-site registration booth.  I strongly suggest that you double or even triple-book your sessions in case your first choice is either full (a very good possibility) or not what you expected.
What To Bring
  • Clothing - Expect temperatures in the upper 80's to low 90's outside, with cool, comfortable evenings.  It is quite chilly in the convention center so take that into consideration.
  • "Swag Bag" - you will not leave Orlando without a few new t-shirts (if you're lucky.)  Odds are you'll be able to clothe a small Midwestern American town and provide them each with a new Frisbee or screaming code monkey.  Travel light to begin with, and pack an extra bag in your luggage to take all the freebies home to your User Group or kids.
  • Laptop - yes, these can be a distraction in the breakout sessions, but how many of us really don't plan on taking a laptop?  The Convention Center offers many opportunities for connecting to the available Wi-Fi or charging stations.  Wi-Fi reception was sketchy in some of the breakout session rooms last year however.  If you leave your laptop in the hotel, there are many community terminals available for use outside of the breakout sessions as well as on the vendor expo area.
  • Footwear - you will not believe how much walking you'll do.  Flip flops are great for lounging, but not for miles of walking and hours of standing.
On-Site Registration For those enrolled in pre-conference seminars, you'll be able to beat the unbelievably long lines on Tuesday morning by checking in Monday.  Those not enrolling in pre-conferences should be prepared for ominously long lines before the Tuesday keynote.  The site does a good job of moving everyone along though, but do not plan on simply walking in, getting your badge and bag and heading to the keynote or hands-on-labs.  It's not going to happen.
Tech-Ed After Dark Thursday night is the Attendee Party, sponsored by Microsoft and included in the cost of registration.  Though still a secret, Universal Studios is closing early on both Thursdays of Tech-Ed for a private party.  Hmmmmm....

Besides this event, Microsoft sponsors a private Influencer party for Microsoft Certified Professionals, User Group Leaders, and MVPs.  There are a multitude of other vendor-sponsored private parties on the other nights as well.

Next Steps

  • Review the sessions being presented at this year's Tech-Ed in Orlando to determine if you'll benefit from the event.  If so, proceed to http://www.microsoft.com/events/teched2008/default.mspx, pick your week (Developer or IT Professional) and register.
  • Schedule your classes using the Tech-Ed website.  Include some hands-on labs.
  • Take into consideration that during Tech-Ed, Microsoft will offer discounted certification tests.
  • Join at least one group on the Connect website.  Make plans to meet up with someone new with similar interests.  It's a great way to get a new perspective on the tools you support.

Wish I was going. I've been going every other year since 2000. Always a fun-filled week and, with 2008 out, there is sure to be a lot of new stuff to see. I started at a new company and it wasn't budgeted but I'll be there next year! Have a great time.

It is unfortunate that not everyone can attend these events. I will not be going either.

Is it possible for someone that is going to give us an update on the highlights?

Thanks Greg

If my memory serves me correctly (and it usually doesn't!), there will be postings on various websites about highlights, speakers, a little of everything. I know as an attendee, we'd receive CDs of the various sessions and I seem to remember web-sessions (post event) that could be viewed online. Not sure if MS still provides that, even for a fee for us non-attendees, but if/when I see or hear of anything, I'll post back.
