Abstract

SQL Server 2012 introduces a variety of new features to improve availability and uptime. Features like AlwaysOn Availability Groups make it possible for all sorts of preventative maintenance tasks to occur on a secondary server, to offload backup jobs, and split reporting workloads.

In this session, our speakers reveal tricks and tips for taking full advantage of these powerful new capabilities, as well as existing ones, to prevent both planned and unplanned downtime from affecting application databases.

They also go a step further and show you how you can get even more functionality by combining LiteSpeed for SQL Server with SQL Server 2012’s high-availability features. You’ll see how this approach will enable you to quickly and easily create jobs that back up to a preferred database, force a backup on the primary, or back up the primary and all secondary servers.

Speakers

Luis Vargas is a Senior Program Manager in the SQL Server High Availability team at Microsoft. For the past 2 years, he has worked on AlwaysOn, the new HA/DR solution in SQL Server 2012. He is also involved with other SQL Server distributed system features, including Service Broker, Query Notifications, and SQL Dependency. He has a PhD in Distributed Systems from Cambridge University.

David Gugick is the Director of Product Management for the Data Protection business unit at Quest Software. David brings more than 20 years of technical and management experience in application development and database design to Quest. David also is a published author. He holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan. He likes coffee. Follow him on Twitter @davidgugick.
