Performance Troubleshooting SQL Server with Native Tools

SolarWinds sponsored on-demand webinar

Webcast Abstract

Learning how to detect, diagnose, and resolve performance problems in SQL Server® is tough. Often, people spend years learning how to use tools and techniques to help them detect when a problem is occurring, diagnose the root cause of the problem, and resolve it. By attending this session on SQL Server and Azure® SQL performance troubleshooting and optimization (PTO), you'll condense years of on-the-job experience into a single hour.

In this session, you'll learn a bulletproof workflow for PTO. Attendees will see demonstrations of the tools and techniques designed to make difficult troubleshooting scenarios much faster and easier, including the following:

  • Old technologies like profiler/traces and Performance Monitor
  • Current technologies using Dynamic Management Views (DMVs)
    • Using wait statistics
    • Specialty DMVs for CPU, I/O, memory, and more
  • Newer technologies like Query Store and Extended Events (XEvents)

Every DBA needs to know how to keep their SQL Server instance in tip-top condition, and you'll need the skills covered in this session to do it. In addition, you'll leave the session with a high-quality Transact-SQL script toolkit to use whenever you face a PTO scenario.

Prerequisites: Intermediate database administration and development skills—especially competence with SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).

  • Goal 1: Learn the "sieve" method of troubleshooting and problem-solving and how to make SQL Server alert you when problems arise.
  • Goal 2: Discover how to use wait stat analysis and correlate performance information from other sources inside of SQL Server, including DMVs, performance counters, and XEvent/trace information.
  • Goal 3: Learn how to use the most important native tools within SQL Server through live demos to successfully conduct troubleshooting and performance tuning.
