SQL in 30 – UPDATE Basics

On-demand Learning

This session covers the UPDATE statement with a strong focus on safety protocols, as UPDATE is an SQL command to be used with caution. Webinar participants will learn how to:

  • do basic single and multi-column updates
  • create conditional updates with WHERE and CASE statements
  • updates with JOINs and some advanced techniques using subqueries and OUTPUT clauses, and
  • craft comprehensive transaction-based safety patterns.

The session emphasizes the critical importance of always testing with SELECT first, using transactions for protection, verifying row counts, and having rollback strategies using data and examples from the AdventureWorks2025 database.
